Acting on Impulse is:

1    characterized by actions based on sudden desires, whims, or inclinations rather than careful thought
an impulsive man
2    based on emotional impulses or whims; spontaneous
an impulsive kiss
3    forceful, inciting, or impelling

This can be frustrating and overwhelming, but there are ways to manage your impulses and stay in control. Here are a few tips.

We all have urges that we want to control, but often find difficult.

This is because our brain has a hard time stopping the action of our fingers or toes when they are in motion. In this article, we will discuss 5 ways to help you stop acting on your impulses.

Impulsive Reaction

Understand What Impulses Are

The first step is to understand what impulses are.

Impulses are thoughts, feelings, or actions that we want to act on but don’t necessarily have the willpower to stop. They can be small (like wanting to eat a candy bar) or big (like wanting to run away from home).

Romans 8:5,6  “those who live according to the flesh have their mindset on what the flesh desires but those who live according with the spirit have your mindset on what the spirit desires the mind governed by the flesh is death but the mind covered by the spirit is life and peace”

Practice Stopping Yourself Before You Act

The second step is practice stopping yourself before you act.

This means learning how to control your impulses and stay in control of your own body.

One way to do this is by prayer.

Whenever you have an impulse, tell yourself calmly and clearly why you are resisting the urge and how you will manage the situation if you do act on it, keeping your mind on what and how God want you to react.

This can help: remember that when you give in to the urge, you’re giving the impulse control over you. Do you want this power over yourself?

The next step is to learn how to control your impulses. This means understanding what triggers them and how to deal with them.

Sometimes, we can’t control what triggers an impulse, but we can control how we respond to it.

For example, if you’re feeling angry, you might want to try calming down before you act on the impulse to yell at someone. And remember always to have some scriptures ready or memorized when the impulse arises.

Make A Plan

Third is to make a plan. This means figuring out what you will do if the impulse comes up and deciding when and where you will act on it.

For example, if you know that eating sweets makes you feel bad afterward, make a plan to eat something healthy after dinner instead.

Journaling can help you understand your impulses and how you think and react. if you can, you write down what you were feeling when the impulse to act came over you?

What was motivating your decision to act on that feeling? Was the feeling really that strong to act on?

If writing is too much of a chore for you, using a video voice recorder as your journal can also be very effective.

Recording what you feel and what happened in the situation to the best of your knowledge, try to recall your feelings and record why you wanted to act on the impulse.

I find it always helps to wait a while before listening back to the recording, sometimes I may be a few days or weeks. To remove yourself from the situation and listen back can give you a lot of insight into yourself.

Research your impulse in scripture to find proper versus dealing with the problem. Memorize and learn these verses and repeat them daily, mentally think on them throughout the day.

The problem with control is that it usually means that the person has to give up something they want or do something that is not good for them. An alternate explanation is provided by the article, which says:

“Control” is a very loaded word, and one that is often misunderstood. To control is to exert force over. It implies a struggle to control and an inner conflict over whether to control the desires or to let them flow.

Impluse Bible study and prayer

The fifth step is to relax the body and mind and get alone with Jesus. This means taking some time each day to do things that make you feel good.

This might include reading the bible, going for a walk, listening to christian or worship music, or doing some prayer or meditation. When you’re relaxed, your impulses are less likely to control you.

During this time to listen to the Holy Spirit and get it tuned into what he is saying.

The more you practice relaxing your body, the easier it will be to do and the more you’ll learn to relax more often.
